What’s your name?

City Host Lawrence (L): My name is Lawrence and I am a city host for Coventry City of Culture.

Are you local to Coventry?

L: I was brought up in Kenilworth, and I’ve lived in Coventry for the past 30 years.

Do you do any other volunteer work?

L: I had never volunteered before.

How did you become a city host, Lawrence?

L: I applied to be a city host in may last year, as I was really keen to get involved in this unique experience.

What do you enjoy about being a city host?

L: I’ve enjoyed meeting other hosts, engaging with the public and I’ve had the pleasure to be involved in some great events.
I even encouraged my neighbour to become a city host.

What’s been your favourite city of culture event, so far?

L: My favourite event was the Tile Hill community circus. It was great to see families engaging with artists and performers, and even remote controlled wheelie bins. There was a lovely atmosphere.

As a city host,  what sort questions do you get asked regularly?

L: I tend not to be asked questions, but have lots of interesting conversations with guests about the events, Coventry and life in general.

Have you been asked anything unusual or been told any interesting stories?

L: I met a gentleman who said his grandfather was on fire watch at the Cathedral in World War 2. He said his Grandfather was one of the first people to witness the bombing of the Cathedral.

Lawrence has already done over 80 volunteer shifts for the City of Culture!

Is there anything else you would like to share about your experience?

L: I have had a brilliant 80+ volunteer shifts so far, and I’m looking forward to reaching 100+ shifts. I am so pleased that we are continuing the City of Culture until May 2022!

“I would say this experience and being a city host volunteer has definitely helped with my Autism. It’s made me come out of my shell a lot more, and also given me the confidence to go on to volunteer at the Commonwealth Games next year, hopefully.”
