How did I get a Teaching Job in Seoul?

Applying for through the EPIK program took over six months. I submitted my application in February. I had a successful skype interview on 22 April, and I was offered a teaching placement in Seoul. Then, I had to send my official documents to secure this offer.

I applied to Teach English in South Korea through the EPIK program with help from a recruiter, ESLstarter.

When I fretted over the EPIK program’s application process and obtaining the appropriate official documents. Phil from ESLstarter was tremendously courteous and helpful. He broke the application process down into smaller steps and explained things clearly.

Fond Farewell

On 19 August 2012, I was extremely excited and nervous to be on my way Birmingham Airport’s Departure Lounge. I knew the leaving my family and heading towards the departures lounge was going to be difficult. 

My mum and her partner Ian took me to Birmingham airport. As a special treat, my brother also came to meet us. My brother provided a welcome distraction and some light relief. Unfortunately, my brother had not been able to get permission to enter the departures lounge with me. But, he still came along in his Police Car to say goodbye. When he left, he even flashed his ‘blues’ for me.

After I left Uni, I went to live and work in Maastricht in the Netherlands. My mum positively encouraged me to do this. She said, “if you don’t like it you can always get on a plane and come home”.

I was packed, I was ready and I was really excited. This was not my first time, so I was surprised to suddenly find myself so upset when I sat down on my own in the departures lounge.

South Korea is so far away from the UK (the flight time is a minimum of 11 hours), plus I did not know what my address would be or anything about my school. It was about to be a huge adventure into the unknown! I was going to miss my family. I reassured myself that if things did not work out in Seoul, then all I needed to do was get on a plane and come home.

During my flight transfer, I spotted this in Dubai international airport and I managed to find some free wifi, so I uploaded it to social media for others to share my amusement.
