How did I get shortlisted?

Jessops choose four beautiful images from the #jessopsmoment hashtag on Instagram for the Jessops Image of the Week.

After this, Jessops post the four shortlisted images on their Instagram & Facebook. Then, they ask their followers to vote for the one that will be Jessops Image of the Week. Finally, they feature the winning image on the Jessops blog and in their newsletter!

I pretty much always use the #jessopsmoment hashtag on my Instagram posts. And, I have done this for years. However, it was still a huge surprise to get a message from Jessops. This message said that my image featuring Tasha Lawer had been shortlisted.

I was even more honoured when I saw the other images. As you can see, they are all very different styles of black and white photography.

Voted BNW Image of the Week!

On 7 August 2019, I received another message from Jessops to congratulate me. Their Facebook and Instagram followers had voted for my image as BNW image of the week. As a result, they wanted to feature it on their blog page for a week.

Jessops asked me to send them the original version of the photo. They asked me to include a little write up on the inspiration behind the shot, including the location and the equipment used.

I was so pleased, and it was a huge confidence boost to have my photo selected as the BNW image of the week. I asked Jessops to contact Tasha Lawer, so she could also include some information about her inspiration for this image.

Here is what I wrote for the Jessops Blog & Newsletter:

I took this photo on 28 July 2019 at Oozells Square in Birmingham. Tasha Lawer lay in the gully which was dry due to the warmer weather. Oozells square is popular with photographers because the gully usually contains water. Under those circumstances, photographers often like to capture the iconic red-brick ikon gallery in the reflection. 

I really liked the way Tasha’s hair settled on the ground. I also liked how the gully framed her body. Tasha moved her hands into several different poses whilst she lay in the gully. She has a powerful and dramatic look. I felt that a high contrast black and white image would really suit this photo and draw attention to her striking features. 

I am not super tall. So I had to hold the camera high above Tasha’s face. I also had to use the flip display screen to assist with capturing this image.

I took this on my Sony a7iii with my 50mm Sony lens

ISO 100, F1.8, 1/200 sec edited in Lightroom
